If you have a love/hate relationship with fall decor, you’re not alone. I love to decorate for fall, but let’s be honest, those traditional fall colors don’t really reflect everyone’s personal style. Like many of you, the color scheme for my home is very neutral with a Farmhouse Shabby Chic style. Don’t get me wrong, I know pumpkins are a fall staple for decorating. But, I like to be different and I like to change things up a bit. I’m going to show you how to ditch the traditional jack-o-lanterns and opt for a more sophisticated take on fall decor AND it will all be budget friendly.
Here’s what you will need to get this look:
-plastic pumpkins (any size you would like)
-spray paint (I love Rustoleum’s Chalk Spray Paints but any spray paint will do)
-dark wax or brown acrylic craft paint (you can use black or grey too depending on the look you want)
-lace, ribbons, whatever print fabric you would like (this is optional)
First spray your pumpkins with your color choice. The Chalked Spray paints do seem to run a little more as their consistency is different from other paints. To help with this, hold the can a little further back. Let your pumpkins dry completely before moving on to the next step. These do dry fast, just make sure they are not sticky to the touch before you wax them.
Once your pumpkins are dry, take dark wax and either using a brush or a rag cover the pumpkins completely.
*Note: a little bit of dark wax goes a long way. Less is more.*
Once they’re completely covered wipe them back leaving the dark wax in all the grooves. I apply my wax in an up and down motion and wipe it off going side to side. If you feel like you’ve used too much wax, clear wax will remove dark wax. If you do not have clear wax, you can wipe as much of the dark wax off as possible and respray them lightly with your spray paint.
If you don’t have dark wax, or dark wax intimidates you, another option is to use brown acrylic paint in a 50/50 mixture of paint and water. Apply it with a brush or rag and wipe it off.
I used the magazine that came in my FabFitFun box to wax my pumpkins on if you’re wondering what’s on that girl’s face. ha! If you haven’t tried those GlamGLow Oxygen Masks, they’re amazing. :-)
Here’s how they’ll look after they’re dark waxed. They have a nice aged look.
I also did a few in Rose Gold.
And lastly if you want to glam them up you can add anything to them, diamonds, pearls, glitter… I chose the simple route and used vintage lace and materials to tie around the stems.
I hope this blog post has inspired you to be creative and step outside the box when it comes to decorating for fall. Fall decorations can still have a pretty, feminine, romantic feel to it. I would love to see your fall decor, whatever your decorating style is. Feel free to message me pics of your decor.
